NESPRESSO AND COLOMBIAN COFFEE GROWERS FEDERATION ANNOUNCE NEW
'Pure Origin' GRAND CRU COFFEE COMPOSED ENTIRELY OF COLOMBIAN ARABICAS
'Pure Origin' Coffee, Rosabaya de Colombia, sourced 100% from the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality TM Coffee Program
MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA (March 25th, 2009) – Nestlé Nespresso, the worldwide pioneer and market leader in premium portioned coffee, and Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC), the largest coffee producer organization in the world, announced today the 'Rosabaya de Colombia,' a new 'Pure Origin' Grand Cru made up entirely of individually roasted Colombian Arabicas from the high steep slopes of Cauca and Nariño. Rosabaya de Colombia is 100% sourced from the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality TM Coffee Program, an initiative which aims to continuously improve the quality, environmental, economic and social performance of its coffee farms and the positive impact on communities, while at the same time safeguarding supplies of high-quality coffee.
"At Nespresso, we pride ourselves in creating the ultimate coffee experience – combining highest quality with a commitment to sustainability," said Richard Girardot, CEO, Nestlé Nespresso.SA "Nespresso coffee experts are constantly travelling the world to bring our Club Members the highest quality Grands Crus. Colombia's Cauca and Nariño regions, which are recognized around the world for their premium coffees, were a natural place for us to seek to source AAA Sustainable Quality™ coffee. We are proud to be able to offer an exceptional AAA Colombian coffee" he added.
"Our work with Nespresso has produced significant benefits for over 20.000 coffee growers that have achieved AAA certification" said Gabriel Silva, FNC's CEO. The development of Rosabaya de Colombia shows how two committed and serious organizations can combine their unique resources and expertise for a long term partnership. This partnership joins our growers together with the Club Members of Nespresso" added Silva. Cultivated at high altitude, this new Grand Cru expresses the wonderful profile of Colombian coffee from the Southern Andes. Its delicate acidity, interspersed with winey notes, is balanced by hints of red fruit – cranberry, red current and blackcurrant.
This unique coffee is the culmination of more than two years of work between experts from Nespresso, FNC and the coffee farming communities of Cauca and Nariño working together to ensure a highest quality product cultivated in harmony with Nespresso's commitment to sustainability
'Rosabaya de Colombia' is one of three new Nespresso 'Pure Origin' coffees, a selection of extraordinary espressos; each genuinely 100% single origin. Rosabaya de Colombia is the only one that is 100% sourced from the AAA Sustainable Quality™ Coffee Program, which means that as well as achieving the highest quality in the cup and being rewarded with premiums, the farmers are also focused on protecting the natural environment. With the addition of the Pure Origin coffees, Nespresso now offers 16 premium Grands Crus for home enjoyment.
Rosabaya de Colombia is now in production and will be available in Nespresso boutiques, from Nespresso relationship centres and through the internet boutique from this month.
"The launch of Nespresso's Pure Origin Espresso line featuring Rosabaya de Colombia signifies a recognition of the hard work of coffee producers in achieving Nespresso's standards and the proverbial high quality of Colombian coffee. It highlights the partnership between the FNC and its growers with Nespresso", said Gabriel Silva.
Over the past 80 years, FNC has been a leader of social and economic development, poverty alleviation, and democracy. FNC's social programs have been instrumental to the well-being of the population in coffee growing areas. The results are outstanding and demonstrate the Federation's capabilities in executing development projects. These capabilities have been acknowledged by prestigious international credit institutions such as the World Bank and the Inter American Development Bank.
FNC provides technical support directly to farmers. Today more than 1,000 visiting agronomists and technicians deliver coffee growers direct training and assistance in sustainability practices, entrepreneurship and domestic accounting. This hands-on approach has been crucial for helping the coffee farmers of Rosabaya de Colombia to meet the high quality, social, economic and environmental standards in order to be included in the Nespresso Grand Cru coffee range.
FNC's long-standing record on economic development, democratic participation, social and economic justice, and environmental standards have enabled the formation of a grass-roots base of small farmers in Cauca and Nariño who now proudly produce this high-end, sustainable quality coffee.
The Nespresso Sustainable Quality TM Coffee Program
Nestlé Nespresso aims to improve the quality of life for coffee farmers and their communities, while, at the same time, safeguarding supplies of high-quality coffee well into the future. In 2003, the company launched the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, co-managed with the Rainforest Alliance, a leading NGO dedicated to improving the sustainability of agricultural production. The Rainforest Alliance remains a key partner in the Nespresso AAA Sustainable™ Quality Program.
Today, Nespresso and its key suppliers work closely with more than 20,000 farmers in Nariño and Cauca who are part of the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Coffee Program to ensure they are implementing farming practices that lead to highest quality beans and economic performance, whilst respecting the environment. Coffee farmers who are part of the program are rewarded not only with higher compensation but also with a long-term partnership with Nespresso.
Currently more than 40% of the coffee Nespresso buys is sourced from farms in the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Coffee Program. By the end of 2010, Nespresso expects 50% of its coffee to be sourced for the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™. Moreover, since the company's sales continue to double nearly every two years, as the percentage of coffee sourced through program increases, so does the volume.
There are many benefits to the Nespresso AAA Sustainable™ Quality Program: Paying price premiums for Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™: Nespresso pays a premium on top of the premium market price for highest quality coffee. Putting systems in place: Established guidelines ensure 75 percent of the export price is transferred directly to farmers.
Improving quality at the farm level: Educating and engaging farmers about highest-quality Nespresso coffee reduces rejected beans from 50 percent to only five percent.
Developing long-term loyalty from farmers: A high majority of farmers in key regions returned over the last four years.
Because of its commitment to sustainability, Nespresso was the ideal partner for FNC to boost Colombian coffee growers' efforts towards high standards of quality and sustainable livelihoods.
